Violence against Indigenous women and girls has been referred to as an “epidemic” by United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and as “genocide” by the National Inquiry. The National Inquiry (2019) in their final report states, “the common thread weaving these statistics together is the fact that violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people is not an individual problem, or an issue only for certain communities. This violence is rooted is systemic factors like economic, social and political marginalization, as well as racism, discrimination, and misogyny.”
