Description

The story follows the materialistic rise of Silas Lapham from rags to riches, and his ensuing moral susceptibility. Silas earns a fortune in the paint business, but he lacks social standards, which he tries to attain through his daughter's marriage into the aristocratic Corey family. Silas' morality does not fail him.

    Although the story takes place in the late 1800's, the people are very real and the moral predicament understandable. This has much to say about today's problems and challenges. A good read (and this is probably the tenth time I've read this in the past forty years).
