Description

The story of Gerty and Uncle True, contained in the first fifteen chapters, will always make the book a favorite. Many a mother will read to her little one the story of the old fashioned lamplighter, whom they never see, but whose mysterious appearance children used to watch, as with torch and ladder he appeared in the gathering darkness, and slowly climbed one post after another, lighting up the dim oil lamps through the street, until he disappeared at the farthest corner.

I just finished reading this true masterpiece for the second or third time, and again find myself in love with it's richness. The author's manner and style of writing are brilliant - the story itself captivating and rich, and the ending meaningful and wonderful.

This is a wonderful book! An aging lamplighter finds a little girl almost literally in the gutter and takes her home to care for her. This is one book that could never be long enough for my wishes.
