Description

James Bond comes to life as you’ve never seen him before in the explosive spy thriller and international bestseller by Jeffrey Deaver.

The action begins when a Night Action alert cuts short a high-end dinner with a captivating woman. Headquarters has decrypted a whispered threat—plans for a chemical disaster with casualties in the thousands, British interests squarely in its crosshairs.

Now Agent?007, in his early thirties and a veteran of the Afghan War, has been recruited to the newly formed Overseas Development Group (ODG)—a post-9/11 covert operations agency that operates independently from MI5, MI6, and the Ministry of Defense. With ultimate authority and arguably unlimited mandates, Bond has been given carte blanche to stop the attack by any means necessary.

In this modern spy thriller, Bond races across Serbia, Dubai, and South Africa to thwart the lethal villain Severan Hydt and his shadowy network. As bureaucratic obstacles and domestic intelligence clashes test his limits, Bond must rely on cunning, high-tech gadgets, and allies like CIA’s Felix Leiter and South African officer Bheka Jordaan to stay one step ahead.

A rebooted James Bond set firmly in the 21st century, Carte?Blanche blends suspenseful espionage, relentless action, and a morally complex protagonist navigating terrorism in a globalized world—a must-read thriller fiction experience.

Deaver never fails to deliver. Very true to a Bond story although I’ve never read Fleming. Great & very interesting characters.
  • Not Ian Fleming but his equal at best!

The last 1/8 of the book was quite predictable, the first 7/8 brought back memories of early Bond.
  • This is not Bond!

Pretty much all the history of James Bond is thrown in the trash can by the author. The author is reimagining James Bond from scratch. Why the Fleming estate permitted this book to be published as part of the James Bond series is beyond me. Most people who have read the Fleming/Gardner/Benson/Amis/Faulk novels will tell you they hate this novel and is not James Bond. There is a reason why Deaver only wrote one Bond novel. And it is not because what he wrote was great.
  • Jeffrey can do much better

Far too much digression to wines, food and bling as oppose to the plot. Audiences are more attune to the dynamics and strength of the story and characters nowadays than the name dropping cliches of 50 years ago

The Bond nuances of his preferred drink and his Omega watch were changed which was a bummer to a fan. He did however have the E type jaguar and the Walter PPK S which were good enough for me. Really enjoyed this book and will certainly read more Bond books from Deaver!!
