I put off reading the last twenty pages of this book because I knew it was going to break my heart and it did, but I think the last five pages might have healed a part of it too.
Epic and intimate

The Song of Achilles is the kind of novel that doesn’t simply retell a myth — it breathes a human heart into one. Madeline Miller takes characters long preserved in marble and legend and makes them achingly alive: vulnerable, passionate, jealous, tender, and devastatingly real.
Told through Patroclus’s eyes, the story transforms the familiar grandeur of Greek mythology into something intimate and deeply personal. Achilles is not merely the invincible warrior of legend, but a boy shaped by destiny, love, and impossible expectations. And Patroclus, with his quiet devotion and emotional honesty, becomes the soul of the novel.
Miller’s prose is luminous without ever feeling showy — elegant, evocative, and emotionally precise. Every scene feels steeped in sunlight and inevitability, as though you’re watching beauty unfold while already sensing the heartbreak to come.
What makes The Song of Achilles extraordinary is that even if you know the myth, the ending still lands with astonishing force. It’s a story about love, mortality, sacrifice, and how being truly known by another person can feel both miraculous and tragic.
A rare novel that is both epic in scale and heartbreakingly intimate, The Song of Achilles lingers long after the final page like the echo of an ancient song
Devastatingly Knowingly Tragic

I write this review with the story fresh on my mind. Truly this book is Shakespearic in nature a true blend of poetry of said time and that of the ancient Greeks. A story with more nuance and focus on the (interpretation of the) personal story of Patroclus and Achilles. A story of innocence, honor, pride - but more than that ; life and love as the driving force. Most know how the story ends as does Patroclus know the prophecy, we are left observing it all as he does and it just adds that much more to the story.
Such a wonderful book
