Written by a surviving witness to the brutality of war in the Pacific (irony: pacific and war). Down to earth descriptions with vivid details of combat conditions. Written with honor and pride of service.

The book was very vivid and told the story well. The only negative thing I could say is that more emphasis was placed on Pellilu than Okinawa. But I do highly recommend this book if you’re interested in the lives of our fathers/grandfathers back then.

It's an amazing read. So many gave so much. Sledgehammer painted a picture in my mind that is forever engraved. Go take the journey.

Incredible detailed account of some of the fiercest Pacific battles of WWII

I telling story of the sacrifices of so many before us that allows us the freedom we take for granted. A well written, poignant memoir of a soldier who shares the day to day life and and experiences of an infantry soldier.

What else can be said? The is one of the best accounts of any war ever written and will leave you humbled for the rest of your life after reading it.

I read this memoir cover to cover in a time frame of about 24 hours. Extremely well-written, this detailed account of one Marine’s experiences in the Pacific give great insight to the triumphs and tragedies associated with heavy combat.

Is was a compelling and disturbing view of combat through the eyes of a Marine Corps private in the battles of Peleliu and Okinawa.

A masterpiece. Should be required reading.
