Very interesting read! It is a story that is as slow paced and methodical as the cattle drive it explores. While it is slow paced, it leads to big rewards. The character development is really well done and the author is very patient with them. There are a lot of cultural themes throughout the book that leave you thinking. It’s take on the Wild West Americana, gender discourse, and race give the reader a lot to think on. I often found myself thinking deeply about these themes when not reading. It is a book that should not be read fast. Take it slow and leisurely and enjoy.

Just a wonderfully constructed character driven saga. Self-indulgent at times and often filled with sorrow and yearning but all said this is a masterpiece of late 20th century American literature. Highly recommended.

Characters bonded to my heart and soul in a way that I was verbally gasping throughout the book. Incredible how well this is written. No words.

I have read and reread this book many times. When my husband and I were trying for a kid, I came to him one day and said “I have a name. Think literature” he immediately knew “Gus”. We ended up with a boy but whether girl or boy they would have been Gus. I bawl my eyes out every time I read it. The first couple hundred pages are a bit slower, but once you’re into it it’s so hard to put down. If naming my kid after it isn’t a good endorsement, I’m not sure what would be.
